HISTORY Sam Houston Elementary opened in 1952. Mr. Ervin C. Whitt was the principal. He served there until 1954. In 2000, a new elementary school opened here in Grand Prairie named after him. Mrs. Nunez is the 12th principal to serve at Sam Houston Elementary. This is her second year here. Sam Houston's school mascot is the Hornet and our colors are blue and gold. Our motto here is "Buzzing with Success" and we believe "It is all about choices!" The school has been through many changes over the years. A library and music room were added in 1987 and a new fourth grade wing and computer lab in 1997. In 2004 the present library opened. This library has more space and many computers for student research. In the Fall of 2006, workers began putting on a new roof. Sam Houston received SACS accreditation in 2002 and since the enactment of No Child Left Behind's "Annual Yearly Progress" began, Sam Houston has "Met Standard" each year. The following is a breakdown of our Texas Education Agency A.E.I.S. rating for the past five years.
